NIGERIAN SENATE TODAY




In today’s plenary, the Nigerian Senate passed the following motions:
1.      THE PREVENTABLE ECONOMIC LOSS AND NATIUONAL EMBARRASSMENT ARISING FROM THE FAILURE OF FED. GOVT.  TO COMPLETE THE NATIONAL LIBRARY AFTER 11 YEARS.
The senate debated this motion and emphasized on the need to wholly migrate to a knowledge based economy which requires such a project to help achieve that goal in this 21st century.
The following were resolved by the Senate:
i.                    Urge the FG to prioritise the funding and completion of the permanent site of the National Library of Nigeria in order to mitigate losses accruable to the project
ii.                  Mandate the Senate Committee on Education to meet with the Honorable Ministers of Education and the Federal Capital Territory and the National Librarian/Chief Executive Officer
2.      ABUSE OF EXPATRIATE QUOTA BY FEDERAL MULTINATIONALS
The Senate resolved to:
i.                    Direct the Senate Committees on Interior and Employment , Labour & Productivity to investigate through a Public hearing all the allegations and report back in one month.
3.      INADEQUATE MAINTENANCE OF FEDERAL GOVT OWNED HOSPITALS
The Senate resolved to:
i.                    Charge the Ministries of Finance and Budget to prioritize the Ministry of Health in the release of annual budgetary allocation
ii.                  Charge the Ministry of Health to ensure efficiency in health care services, and maintain high standard of health care delivery services within the country through periodic training, hospital inspections etc
iii.                Charge the Senate Committee on Health to investigate , probe, or request the audit of federal government owned hospitals; and
iv.                Charge all Federal govt owned hospitals to provide quality management through continuous evaluations

Finally, the Federal Capital Territory budget Bill passed 2nd reading today.
