SENATE PASSES MOTION ON THE ALARMING UPSURGE OF MALARIA INCIDENCE

1.      

The Senate noted that Nigeria accounted for up to 25percent of the global cases and deaths as a result of Malaria endemic. The disease has been adjudged to be the 3rd leading cause of death for children less than 5yrs , taking life of a child every 2 minutes.
Many of the drugs in the market are fake hence there is string resistance by malaria parasite to these drugs.
The Senate resolved to:
i.                    Urge the Federal Ministry of Health as a matter of urgency, procure sufficient quantity of effective anti malaria drugs and supply the free of charge to all public health facilities across the country
ii.                  Urge the Federal Govt , States and Local Govts to embark on mass mobilization that will provide adequate information to all Nigerians on how to take appropriate and effective malaria preventive and treatment measures
iii.                Urge the Fed. Ministry of Health to effectively partner with States and Local Govts Authorities and Development Partners with a view to scaling up Integrated Vector Management and Control as well as streamline all malaria programmes across the country
iv.                Urge the Federal Govt to increase the annual funding of Federal Ministry of Health that will meet the “ ABUJA DECLARATION” by AU IN 2001” as well as ensure full implementation of the National Health Act 2014 and the 1 percent Consolidated Revenue Fund provision for the take up of the Basic Health Care Provision Fund
v.                  Urge the committee on Appropriation to ensure that we capture 2014 National ACT the 1% of Consolidated Revenue Fund should be dedicated to Health Basic Health Provision to be appropriated in 2018 Budget.
