SENATE PASSES A MOTION ON EFCC TO RELEASE INNOSON CEO BY EKWEREMMADU

Deputy Senate President Senator Ike Ekweremmadu presented a motion before the Senate on THE ILLEGAL ARREST AND DETENTION OF INNOSON CEO, INNOCENT CHUKWUMA BY EFCC.

He said that Senate cannot sit down and watch civil liberty trampled upon. He wondered why a business man and an Industrialist will be arrested by EFCC over a business transaction with GT Bank.

He confirmed speaking to Innoson from detention and he told him that he is not owing the bank a dime. Rather its actually the bank that is owing him for a matter that is also before an Appeal Court

Contributing, Senator Abaribe said if the Senate refuses to act, they will all fall victims to this abuse of human rights and liberty someday.

He said EFCC on their twitter handle said they invited him, but the man Innoson CEO said he has never been invited by EFCC.

He confirmed that the wife was assaulted by EFCC while she was questioning why they were arresting her husband.

He went on to say that this amounts to subjudice for EFCC to delve into a matter that is already in court.

Contributing, Senator Adeyeye the chief Whip said where injustice is fostered on any Nigerian, injustice is fostered on all of us(referring to senators).

He said if his rights and liberties are not guaranteed as he has once been harassed for mere allegation through a petition, so what then is left of other Nigerians.

He went on to say that EFCC through this act has violated the Sections 34, 35 and 36 of our Constitution.

He rounded off by saying no greater threat to democracy than when you can assault the citizens.  

The Senate hereby resolved the following:

i.                    To intervene in his arrest

ii.                  Committee on Anti Corruption and financial Crime to investigate and report back to Senate within 24hours.
