Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges today presented the report of the Committee on the Allegations against Senator Omoh Agege that he wrongly accused the Senate of planning to amend the electoral Act to frustrate the relection of President Buhari.
The Committee recommended that the Senator be suspended for 180 days.
This was opened to debate on the floor. First to speak was Senate leader who pleaded for leniency since he had actually apologised on the floor of the Senate.
However, more issues were raised. This issue of him and others forming a Buhari Support group was totally condemned as it was meant to paint other Senators especially from APC in bad light if they dont belong to the group.
Also the issue of him heading to court on the same issue after he had apologised on the floor was of concern to the senators.
Speaking, Senate President Saraki called for leniency but not without a penalty to serve as deterrent. Saraki said the institutions of the Senate Chambers and its decisions must be respected hence the need to caution such anti senate activities of Omoh Agege and some groups.
He called for a review of the recommendations to be:
i. Senator Omoh Agege and the members of the Support Buhari Senators Group to disband the group
ii. The case he instituted in court against the Senate should be withdrawn
iii. Suspension should be reduced to 90 days only.
The Senate through a voice vote accepted these recommendations hence Senator Omoh-Agege has been suspended for 90 days.
