Distinguished Senator Stella Oduah representing Anambra North sponsored a motion to address the challenges of fertilizer distribution in Nigeria and to boost Agricultural production.
It might interest you to know that the core occupation of the rural communities where she comes from are Farming and Fishing, hence they rely on their productivity to send their children to school.
The communities struggle yearly with effects of climate change which forces the great River Niger to drown their farms during rainy season destroying crops. So they are seasonal farmers who require alot of external assistance to meet the challenges they face yearly. Below is the Motion and its objectives:
MOTION
Need to boost Agricultural production, prompt distribution
and optimum utilization of fertilizers in Nigeria.
The motion is to
address the issue of efficient and prompt distribution of fertilizers to
farmers across the country, while recognizing the different farming seasons
across the country due to geographical differences. It will also address the
issue of government promoting increased local production of fertilizers to meet
the rising demand from farmers.
The Main Objectives of
the motion are:
1. It
will facilitate prompt and efficient distribution of fertilizers to farmers
across Nigeria including Anambra Farmers for greater productivity
2. It
will boost Agricultural production from those rural areas who rely heavily on
farming but get little or no support to boost their productivity
3. It
will encourage local production of fertilisers to meet local demands
4. Local
production will reduce pressure on our forex required yearly to finance fertiliser
import into the country
5. It
will encourage many youths into Agriculture as they see greater revenue from
the business as generated by existing farmers
6. It
will translate into burgeoning effect in our Agricultural sector thereby alleviating
poverty vis a vis increased revenue generation
