Hope Uzodimma, governor of Imo state, has approved a new minimum wage of N104,000 for civil servants in the state, making it one of the highest-paying in Nigeria.
The governor announced the increase during a late-night meeting with labour leaders at Government House, Owerri, on Tuesday.
The new wage replaces the previous N76,000 minimum.
Uzodimma also approved a wage raise for doctors from N215,000 to N503,000, and for lecturers in tertiary institutions from N119,000 to N222,000.
“Our workers deserve pay that matches the realities of today,” Uzodimma said.
“When salaries are fair, productivity rises, families are happier, and the local economy benefits. This is our way of investing in Imo people.”
The governor linked the decision to the state’s improved finances, noting that internally generated revenue had grown from N400 million in 2020 to over N3 billion monthly, while debt dropped from N280 billion to under N100 billion.
He also tied the pay rise to the federal government’s fuel subsidy removal.
“The challenge now,” Uzodimma said, “is ensuring the dividends of that bold decision by President Tinubu trickle down to the common man.”
Beyond salaries, Uzodimma announced that from August 27, the state will begin paying the last batch of pension gratuities, amounting to N16 billion.
Uchechigemezu Nwigwe, chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Imo, welcomed the decision, calling it “a victory for the entire workforce.”
