INEC Chairman Yakubu Steps Aside, Hands Over To New INEC Acting Chairman

Professor Mahmood Yakubu has officially handed over to May Agbamuche as the Acting National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The handing over, which took place on Tuesday, came barely 14 days before expiration of tenure of Professor Yakubu.

INEC chairman, who was appointed by late former President Muhammadu Buhari on October 21, 2015, stayed in office for ten years by October 21, 2025 when his tenure will effectively elapse.

Agbamuche is the oldest serving National Commissioner in the electoral body.

Professor Yakubu announced this on Tuesday at the ongoing meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.

He solicited the support of the commissioners and directors of the commission for Agbamuche, until the appointment of a substantive chairman.
