At an emergency plenary on electoral matters today, the House of Representatives commenced deliberations under tense conditions. Outside the National Assembly, protesters continued demonstrations, demanding real-time electronic transmission of votes. Inside the chamber, Hon. Francis Waive moved a motion seeking the rescission of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill to allow the House reconsider the legislation. The motion was seconded by Hon. Bayo Balogun, Chairman of the Committee on Electoral Matters. While lawmakers audibly voted “Nay,” the Speaker ruled in favour of the “Ayes,” triggering loud protests on the floor. The House subsequently moved into an executive session.
