Kwankwaso Backs NDC Southern Zoning for 2027 Election

Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has formally backed the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) decision to zone its 2027 presidential ticket south. He shared his support on Saturday during the party’s national convention in Abuja. Kwankwaso described the move as a sign of fairness and a balanced power-sharing plan.

This high-profile endorsement helps stabilize the internal politics of the opposition coalition. It also offers a clearer path for the nation’s democratic journey as the next election nears.

Speaking to delegates and supporters, Kwankwaso argued that regional rotation is vital for national unity. “I support the decision to zone the presidential ticket to Southern so that the region can complete its eight years,” he stated.

Furthermore, he noted that, “This is in line with the zoning process and party agreement.” Beyond the structural shift, Kwankwaso urged the public to get involved in the party’s growth. He made a direct appeal for grassroots action: “Please register now.”

This endorsement is strategically important for the Nigerian economy and the investment climate. Political clarity often lowers the market risks that usually appear before major elections. By reaching an early deal on zoning, the NDC aims to show stability to the business community.

Investors prefer predictable environments where leaders respect power-sharing agreements. This reduces the risk of civil unrest or sudden policy changes. Consequently, this move could help create a better atmosphere for long-term fiscal planning and foreign investment.

The formal resolution to zone the ticket passed just hours before Kwankwaso’s speech. Representative Afam Victor Ogene moved the motion during the convention. This decision sets a single four-year term for the southern candidate. After this period, the party expects power to shift back again.

National Chairman Moses Cleopas explained that this plan balances regional interests within the group. Looking at the long-term rotation, Cleopas offered a clear timeline. “It will be the turn of the North in 2031,” he stated. This transparency helps prevent internal fights and maintains a united front against the ruling
