NDC Demands Proof of Resignation Before Accepting Homeless Defectors From APC

The Kaduna State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has said it will only accept politicians defecting from other parties if they present documented proof of resignation from their former political platforms.

The state chairman of the party, Modecai Ibrahim, made the position known during the party’s maiden expanded meeting, which brought together ward, local government, and state executives, alongside aspirants and supporters.

Ibrahim said the decision was part of efforts to ensure transparency, discipline, and adherence to internal party rules as the NDC strengthens its structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He warned that the party would not tolerate individuals attempting to infiltrate its ranks under false pretences, describing such actors as potential “friends of enemies” who could undermine internal cohesion.

According to him, no new entrant would be allowed to hold office or contest elections on the platform of the NDC without evidence of formal disengagement from their previous political party.

The party leadership said the measure was necessary to prevent internal conflicts and legal disputes that often arise from unresolved defections in Nigeria’s political system.

Ibrahim also outlined the party’s mobilisation plan in Kaduna State, stating that the NDC aims to recruit at least 1.5 million members across the state before October 31.

He noted that membership targets at the ward level had been increased as part of efforts to expand grassroots presence and strengthen party structures ahead of the elections.

Party officials also urged members to conduct all political activities peacefully and in line with the law, stressing the importance of discipline as the party prepares for wider political participation.

The NDC said the new policy reflects its commitment to building a structured and rules-based political platform in contrast to the fluid nature of defections in Nigeria’s political landscape.

The development comes as political parties across the country intensify preparations and realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
