Nigerian Senate passed a motion today on:
INFLUX OF REFUGEES FROM THE REPUBLIC OF CAMEROUN TO SOME BORDER COMMUNITIES IN CROSS RIVER STATE AND ITS ATTENDANT SECURITY FALLOUT
The motion which was sponsored by Senator John Enoh, highlighted the brewing crisis in Southern Cameroun that has forced many of their citizens into Nigeria as refugees.
According to the motion, as at 16th December, 2017 the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNCHR) had registered ten thousand (10,000) arrivals in remote areas of Nigeria's Cross river State and indicated that thousands more are awaiting registration.
He went on to inform the Senate that on January 25th, 2018, more than 80 Cameroonian Soldiers with various weapons crossed the international boarder of the Danare-Daddi/Danare-Bodom axis and abducted five natives.
Senate therefore resolved to:
1. Call on Nigerian military authorities to increase military presence and intensify border patrol within the area
2. Call on Minister of foreign Affairs to urgently liaise with his Cameroonian counterpart to secure the release of these innocent Nigerians
3. Call on Nigeria and Cameroun to strengthen the capacity of Nigeria-Cameroun trans-border security committee aimed at addressing emerging trans-border security issues confronting the two countries
4. Call on the UN Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) to intensify ongoing efforts aimed at protecting the Cameroonian refugees and assist in their voluntary repatriation , local integration or resettlement
5. Urge all relevant agencies of government saddled with the responsibility or managing emergencies such as National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to intensify their remedial efforts of providing relief materials to the refugees
6. Finally, invite the Minister of Defence to brief Senate committee on the trespass of Camerounian soldiers.
