BILLS AND MOTIONS PASSED BY SENATE TODAY

In today’s plenary, The Senate passed a motion on:

1.      THE ASSENT OF THE NORTH EAST DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION BILL

The Bill noted that assent to the Bill marks the establishment of the North East Development  Commission to among other things.
The Senate resolved to:

i.                    Commend the President for his assent to the North East Development Commission Bill and committmmet to the plight of the North East region

ii.                  Commend the Senate President and the leadership of the Senate and distinguished senators of the 8^th Senate for their support which would see to the restoration of normal life in the Northeast.

iii.                Urge the Federal Govt to make adequate financial provisions in the 2018 Budget for the commission’s appropriate take-off; and

iv.                Urge the Donor Agencies to continue to support the North East through the newly established commission.

In line with the spirit, while debating the motion, some senators called for the and expeditious process to also pass the South East Development Commission Bill to help alleviate the sufferings of the people in the region due to infrastructural decay in the zone orchestrated by FG neglect of the region.

In his concluding remarks, the DSP who was presiding, thanked the President for assenting to the Bill. He said the commission is expected to address the humanitarian crisis in North East. He stated that the Senate has shown committment to the development of Nigeria and is very mindful of the concerns of Nigerians.

Also the following Bills passed 2^nd Reading in the Senate today;

1.      A Bill for an Act to establish the Federal Polytechnic Silame, Sokoto State to provide full-time courses in technology, applied science management and other fields of studies and to make provisions for the general administration of the Polytechnic and for other Matters thereof, 2017

2.       A Bill for an Act to establish the Nigerian Tax Academy in order to provide training, develop standard curriculum for continuous education of Tax Administrators and collectors to facilitate effective service delivery and for other matters, 2017

3.        A Bill for an Act to amend the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria and for related matters, 2017

4.      A Bill for a Act to amend the Legal Practictioners Act CAP C11 LFN 2004 and for other connected matters, 2017

5.      A Bill for an Act to amend the National Orientation Agency Act, CAP N10 and for other connected matters, 2017
