SENATE PASSES MOTION TO REGULATE CIGARRETTES SMOKING SPONSORED BY SENATOR TINUBU

The Nigeria Senate today deliberated on the motion on:
"The Need to Immediately Ban Tobacco Companies from Targeting School Children in Nigeria".

The motion highlighted the rising concern of use of Tobacco by our youths who are daily lured through adverts and signs within 100m of schools to stimulate children and youths to develop interest.

The motion highlighted the report of survey carried out by Nigerian Tobacco Research Group in 5 states of the federation which revealed the location of Tobacoo Products Point of Sales within visible distance of 100m or less away from schools as against the Framework Convention on tobacco Control and the National Tobacco Control Act 2015 which is aimed at the prevention and substantial reduction of accessibility of Tobacco and Tobacco products to young people.

Senate then resolved:
1. Urge Fed Ministry of Health to ensure comprehensive prohibition of Tobacco Advertising , Promotion and Sponsorship (TAPS)
2. Urge the Ministries of Health and Education at the Federal and State levels to work together to ban advertisement and location of Point of Sales  of products within 100m of all schools
3. Urge Fed. Min. of Health to ensure a framework for the monitoring of the implementation of the ban on single sticks and cigarrettes packs with less than 20 sticks as detailed in National Tobacco Control Act of 2015
4. Urge the Fed. Ministry of Health to promote and advertise the 'No Sale of Tobacco to Minors' Signage
5. Urge all Tobacco companies to henceforth stop the advertisement and location of Point of Sales within 100m of such places.
