In today’s plenary, Senator
Stella Oduah Co-Sponsored a Motion on:
Adequate Provision of
Inclusive and Accessible Basic Education
for Children with Disabilities in Nigeria.
The Motion which was
Sponsored by Senator Benjamin Uwajumogu representing Imo North, was to address
the challenges the disable people among us face to acquire education and socialize
themselves accordingly. While delivering the motion in his lead debate, Senator
Benjamin Uwajumogu noted that World Report on Disability published in 2011,
states that about 25million Nigerians had at least one disability.
Furthermore, he stated
that about according to UNICEF data, 95% of children with disability in
developing countries are out of school.
Accordingly, he
emphasised that Nigeria has signed up to 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
Goal 4, with a target by 2030 to ensure all school children including those
with disabilities have access to qualitative, functional and effective basic education.
He opined that If
disabled children are giving the conducive environment to thrive and grow their
potentials, they will competently contribute their quota to National Development.
The Senate resolved
accordingly:
i.
Call on the Senate Committee on Women
Affairs and Social Development to summon the Minister of Women Affairs and
Social Development to brief the committee on the progress made towards
improving welfare of the disabled in Nigeria
ii.
Call on the Federal Ministry of
Education to improve on their policy making, institutional development and
infrastructural development to promote inclusive and increased educational
access for children with disabilities in Nigeria
iii.
Call on the Federal Govt to make
provisions for the welfare and sadfety of the disabled on all public buildings,
schools and roads.
Objectives of the
motion:
i.
The motion will address the imbalance in
educational sector that deprives the disabled yearly
ii.
It will comply with the SDG goals
targeted to meet certain educational requirements by 2030
iii.
It will compel FG to begin to plan for
the disabled in Nigeria as it is done in civilised nations where schools,
buses, social security etc are all provided for the disabled in the society to
assist them to survive in the mist of their challenges
iv.
It will help Govt to keep accurate
statistics of all the disabled in the country.
v.
It will propel the development of
infrastructure to accommodate the plight of the disabled in our mist
vi.
It will compel the FG to begin to plan
on how to create a sustainable social security for the disabled.
The motion was passed
comfortably on the floor of the Senate as no Senator spoke against it.
